In 2009 the University began the implementation of a new ERP system for human resources, procurement, and finance. With a go-live date of July 2011 for the new SRM system, the BU Sourcing and Procurement team was confronted with both a challenge and a unique opportunity.
"My team continuously strives to deliver best-in-class strategic sourcing and spend management services in order to close the gap between what is being spent and what can be spent to achieve BU objectives" says Richard Stack, Director of Sourcing and Procurement. "But with a staff of only 20, my team was continually challenged by data quality issues in the vendor master that prevented them from achieving their vendor registration goals and commodity portfolio analysis."
In keeping with an established tradition of continuous improvement, the Sourcing & Procurement team viewed the looming implementation as an opportunity to further improve efficiency and enhance their service to the University community. With an eye toward fully exploiting the possibilities inherent in the new solution, the team began a thorough review of existing business processes. It soon became apparent that a new supplier management strategy had to be deployed prior to the ERP go-live date.
